How to Build a Personal Brand at Work and Thrive in Your Career

Welcome to Get Organized at Work! Today, we’re diving into a game-changing topic: creating a personal brand at work. Whether you’re a healthcare leader, HR professional, designer, or manager, building a strong personal brand can help you stand out, build trust, and open new career opportunities.

In this post, I’ll walk you through why personal branding matters, practical exercises to define your brand, and a fun tool to enhance self-awareness. Let’s get started!

Why Personal Branding Matters

You’ve probably heard the phrase, “don’t care what people think of me.” While that might work in some areas of life, it doesn't hold up at work. How others perceive you can influence your career trajectory, trustworthiness, and opportunities for growth.

Your personal brand is your professional reputation. It’s how others describe you when you’re not in the room. By being intentional about your brand, you ensure that what people perceive aligns with your goals and values.

Step 1: Define How You Want to Be Perceived

Ask yourself: How do I want people to see me at work?

Start by identifying three attributes you want to embody. For example, my personal brand focuses on being:

1. Organized - I want people to say, “You read my mind!” This reflects my proactive communication and ability to stay ahead.

2. Reliable - I aim to ensure my team never wonders what’s coming next.

3. Present - Even when my to-do list is overwhelming, my priority is to show up and actively engage with those around me.

Exercise:

  1. Write down three qualities you want to embody at work.

  2. Reflect on how others currently perceive you.

  3. Ask a trusted colleague or mentor for feedback to align your self-perception with reality.

Step 2: Align Your Actions with Your Brand

Once you’ve defined your desired attributes, it’s time to align your actions with them. Here’s how:

If you want to be seen as organized:

  • Proactively share updates with your team.

  • Use tools like project management apps or shared calendars.

If you want to be perceived as present:

  • Eliminate distractions during meetings.

  • Actively listen and respond thoughtfully.

If you want to appear curious:

  • Commit to continuous learning by reading industry articles, attending webinars, and taking courses.

  • Share your insights with your team to position yourself as a thought leader.

Step 3: Use Tools to Build Self-Awareness

Understanding yourself is key to creating an authentic personal brand. One tool I highly recommend is the 16 Personalities Test.

This free, quick, and approachable test provides insights into your personality type, strengths, and areas for growth. It’s based on the Myers-Briggs framework but adds practical, relatable guidance.

For example, I’m a Protagonist (ENFJ-A), described as an inspiring optimist who loves helping others and taking action. My results showed that I’m 93% extroverted and 91% intuitive, which aligns with how I approach work and relationships.

How to Use the Test:

1. Take the test at 16personalities.com.

2. Reflect on your results and how they align with your brand goals.

3. Share your profile with your team or community to foster understanding and collaboration.

Step 4: Stay Consistent

Building a personal brand doesn’t happen overnight. Consistency is key. Align your daily actions, communication, and decisions with your desired brand.

Weekly Check-In:

At the end of each week, reflect on your progress:

  • Did your actions align with your brand attributes?

  • What went well, and where can you improve?

  • Seek feedback from a mentor or colleague to refine your approach.
