3 Key Focus Areas of High Performing Leaders
High performing leaders need more than strategy in their back pocket. They need three key focus areas that allow them to personally develop and improve their mindset, set clear expectations and boundaries, and utilize standard tools and templates to set strategy. In today's episode, I dive into each focus area in depth as well as share how each area will improve different aspects of your wellbeing and success as a leader.
TOOLS - Every leader needs standardized tools and templates that allow them to be strategic and also eliminate decision fatigue. Some of my favorite tools, like Leader Standard Work, are linked in the buttons below for you. Tools for things like effective communication or role responsibilities and accountabilities or continuous improvement are imperative for ensuring a high level of performance because the tool guides your next move and helps you determine if you’re actions are getting the desired results.
MINDSET, PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT, SELF-AWARENESS - Leaders must take care of their minds and the way they view everyday situations and problems. I have found that the most proactive, adaptable, happy, and successful leaders have daily practices like affirmations, journaling, reading personal development, and exercise, that keep their minds energized, healthy, and curious. Healthily leaders also take care of their bodies by eating well and finding daily movement that sets the tone for their day. I have also found taking different leadership or self-awareness tests like Discovery Insights or the Enneagram help me to better understand myself and improve my interactions with others.
CLEAR EXPECTATIONS AND DIRECTION - Leaders who are efficient, confident, and organized have clear, realistic expectations for themselves and others. They strive to prioritize what is important right now and plan for prioritizing what will be important in the future. They realize when they need to set a boundary with work, their colleagues, or with certain tasks, and they ask for feedback from colleagues often so they can pivot as needed. Without clear expectations, leaders become depleted and burned out. They become resentful, unsure, and doubting. Leaders want to feel confident, fulfilled, and prepared for their days, and so defining what daily success looks like is paramount to their continued growth and finding higher self each day.
