Succeeding in a New Job Without Formal Training
In today’s episode, I’m sharing how to be successful in your new role if you were brought on board without any formal training. Yup…been there, done that. Good news is that my tips work for those looking to dive deeper into understanding their organization, team members, company culture, and discovering what the next right steps are.
The first module of my course, “The Leader Toolkit"" is called “Your Custom Learning Plan.”
I teach on the concepts of Gemba as well as “going slow to move fast.”
Additionally, I share my learnings from Michael Watkin’s book “The First 90 Days.” There’s a quote in the book that says something like “The President has 100 days” to make things happen, “you have 90.”
I agree — it’s so important to gain trust with your people in the first three months. That means you'll need to:
Identify some quick wins for you and your team. (These are things that are relatively easy to accomplish, but have a large, positive impact.")
Meet and gain a new mentor in someone folks at the organization already trust and who is well respected to help you learn more and provide a safe space to go to for questions you will have about why things are the way they are today. This person can help you with historical context behind decisions made as well as provide contacts and advice for navigating current issues.
Listen to your team members, learn their pain points as well as their successes, and hear how they thing it would be best to solve problems.
Identify projects that may require more effort than your quick wins, but that are strategic, informed, will eliminate barriers, and are desired by your front line staff.
In the Leader Toolkit Course, I provide a PDF download with questions adapted from “The First 90 Days” and I guide you through how to “Gemba Walk,” and “why” in a genuine state of curiosity so you can listen and learn more.
I also provide a video recording of me going over all the material and concepts that are in the PDF.
